We need leaders who listen, leaders who build, and leaders who know what’s at stake for our neighborhoods, our communities, our state, and our country.

Born and raised in the east Metro, Matt’s the proud product of Minnesota public schools. He attended Mayo Medical School, where he helped pay his student loans by waiting tables. He currently works at Mayo Clinic in internal medicine, after years of working at Hennepin Healthcare. Since 2017, he has served in the state Senate representing friends and neighbors in northern Dakota County. Counting it among the most profound experiences of his life, he enters the Capitol every day inspired to learn more about the issues confronting the second congressional district, and strives to work with all legislators to find solutions.
He and his wife Kristine have been married 35 years, and they have five young adult children. They are the inspiration for his work as a physician and a legislator.
In the legislature, Matt proudly represents the residents of Northern Dakota County and Washington County in Minnesota’s Senate District 53. Matt has passed laws protecting Minnesotans from financial fraud and predatory lending. He has controlled the rising cost of medications by regulating the pharmaceutical industry. He has affirmed the rights of Minnesotans to make their own choices about reproductive health.
Too many Minnesotans are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of everything seems to be going up—from groceries, gas, and cars to healthcare, housing and childcare—but wages aren’t keeping up. As a State Senator I’ve worked to rein in the cost of prescription drugs, cracked down on scammers, and worked to prevent property tax hikes on seniors and the middle class. In Congress, I’ll continue to crack down on corporations gouging consumers while they make record profits. I’ll work to bring back economic stability which has been undermined by chaos in Washington.
Through my time as both a State Senator and a doctor, I’ve sat with families navigating impossible choices—choosing between paying the rent or filling a prescription, delaying care because of high deductibles, or driving hours just to see a doctor. In the State Senate, I’ve worked to fix these failures by passing Minnesota’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board to conduct cost reviews of prescription drug products and set payment limits. In Congress I would fight to give Medicare the right to negotiate all drug prices in order to lower prices for everyone.
I’ve also seen too many families struggle with the high cost of private insurance—especially in rural Minnesota. That’s why I support a public option, which would give every American the choice to buy into a high-quality, affordable health plan while keeping private insurance for those who want it. It’s about giving people more options, lowering costs through competition, and ensuring no one is left without care just because they can’t afford a private insurance plan. And in a time when misinformation in Washington seriously threatens public health, I will always defend the truth about vaccines and medical science.
Agriculture is central to Minnesota’s economy, and our farmers deserve a champion in Washington. I have worked to secure funding for soil health initiatives, farm sustainability programs, and disaster relief for farmers facing droughts and extreme weather. I support fair trade policies that open new markets for Minnesota’s agricultural products. In Congress, I’ll fight for strong crop insurance programs, protections for family farms against corporate monopolies, and policies that keep our rural communities strong.
Let’s ensure rural Minnesota has access to the same critical infrastructure that urban areas often take for granted: reliable broadband, safe roads and bridges, quality healthcare facilities, and modern schools. Let’s ensure access to affordable housing and childcare. These aren’t luxuries, they’re necessities for families, farmers, small businesses, and local economies to thrive. I backed investments in rural broadband as a Senator and in Congress, I’ll fight to make sure rural voices are heard and rural needs are met—because a stronger Minnesota starts with strong communities in every corner of our state.
As a physician, I trust women to make their own health care decisions—and as a State Senator, I’ve defended that right in the face of growing political interference. I’m running for Congress because reproductive freedom is under attack nationwide, and we need leaders who will protect it. Decisions about pregnancy, contraception, and abortion belong between a woman and her doctor—not politicians or judges. I will fight to restore the protections under Roe v. Wade and ensure that every woman, in every state, has the freedom to control her own body and future.
As a former Mendota Heights school board member and a proud parent of five children who all attended public schools, I know firsthand the transformative power of a strong public education system. I’ve seen how great teachers, safe classrooms, and well-funded schools can open doors for every child—no matter their background. In Congress, I’ll fight to protect and strengthen our public education system so that every student has the opportunity to succeed, just like my own children did.
That means fully funding our public schools, respecting our teachers and school support staff, expanding access to early learning, and increasing mental health support for students. Investing in public education is the best thing we can do—for our kids, our economy, and our democracy.
Matt has a record of standing up for Minnesotans and defending the truth – both as a physician and a legislator.
In Minnesota, we believe in rolling up our sleeves and working together. We take care of each other. That’s who we are, and that’s what Matt has done his whole life.
If you’re ready for leadership that brings us together, then Matt needs you in this moment.
